Question 2: Compare and contrast the actions of G-Proteins and Ion-Gated channels.
Both G-Proteins Couple receptors (GPCRs) and Ion-gated channels are distinct types of cell membrane receptors that play an important role in cellular signing. Both are targets of psychotropic medications. Reading our textbook, I learned that GPCRs often imply numerous steps in signal transduction, leading to slower and more maintained response. For example, the onset of therapeutic actions of the antidepressive Escitalopram usually takes 2-4 weeks. In contrast, Ion-gated channels provide fast and direct responses to neurotransmitter, the opening or closing of these channels occurs quickly, thus, medications that act on these receptors can have an immediate effect. Example, Lorazepam may be used for short term symptoms of anxiety (Stahl, 2021a).
