“The Secret: Dare to Dream”, is a movie based on a self-help book by Rhonda Byre, published in 2006. The movie is about a widowed woman and a single mother of three children, the woman ‘Miranda Wells’ is stressed and is in great debt. She manages a small restaurant but she cannot afford some pleasures like a pizza for her kids. Miranda is dating her boss, but it is mostly out of pressure rather than joy. A man called Bray arrives carrying an envelope with a seal and the logo on it reads “The Secret”. The man who is also a professor brings good life-changing information to Mrs. Wells. The movie has faced a lot of controversies since it was released but the story was ideally set to explain the law of attraction.
In the movie, there is a lot of things that are not clear to the viewer, and are contradicting. Miranda cannot afford to buy a computer for her daughter on her birthday, she cannot afford to fix their house, and on top of that, she gets into a small accident and her car needs to be fixed (Tennant, 2020). A stranger offers to fix the car and also fixes her house when the hurricane hits. The stranger is the man who comes bearing a secret for a better life, for Miranda (Tennant, 2020). The movie is controversial since it’s believed to alternate poverty with laziness at some point. It encourages people just to sit and think about something so hard and it will appear.
The movie was set to show the law of attraction but that is not well explained throughout the movie and leaves a lot of questions. The law of attraction explains that in case a person is poor and they visualize themselves as rich, and then they will eventually be rich. One can indeed be rich if one focuses on getting rich, but there has to be some work put in place since no one gets rich magically (Tennant, 2020). The movie indicates that most of the rich people knew the ‘Secret,’ and that includes; Newton, Einstein, Edison, and Plato. The movie however does not offer any explanation on how these people used the law of attraction to become rich.
The movie further claims that the law of attraction is a secret, that is well known by the rich and those in power in the society but has been kept away from the rest of the people. There are scenes in the movie that show people being persecuted for trying to bring the secret to ordinary people (Tennant, 2020). However, the law of attraction has never been a secret kept away from some people, and the movie does not offer a clear explanation for this. The movie further shows how people’s minds emanate electromagnetic waves that spread over the whole world (Tennant, 2020). Our thoughts are believed to be electromagnetic to some extent, but there is no indication; that is scientifically proven that our brains can alter the whole world meaningfully.
The movie has both a good side and a controversial side. Sadly, the largest part is controversial; since it does not clearly explain some things. The movie was ideally set to explain how the law of attraction works; however, it does not give a fulfilling explanation of how some of the rich people got rich through the law. The movie would have been better if it explained all the theories in-depth and helped people understand them. On the contrary, the movie encourages people just to sit, think of getting rich and it happens. People need to work hard to get rich even after thinking hard about getting rich.
