There are three spatial dimensions in the world such as height, width and length. Such art as sculpture or architecture operates with all three spaces, but in drawing, it is two-dimensional. In order to come to such a perfect way to convey space in the picture, it took an evolutionary process to go through. Contemporary art has many tools and mediums and has its own history.

Overlapping is the easiest way to convey that some objects are closer to others. Getlein (2019) says that before the advent of linear perspective, artists placed closer objects to the bottom of the sheet. During the Renaissance, the principle of linear perspective was formulated based on the transmission of shadow and penumbra, which changed the drawing style. Forms appear to get smaller as they move away, and parallel lines receding into the horizon converge before disappearing (Getlein, 2019). Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper exemplifies how linear perspective is used in art.

One of the most popular techniques for connecting disparate objects with similar patterns is through asymmetric balance. Asymmetric balance is used a lot in design and painting; an example is Gustav Klimt’s work Death and Life. Getlein (2019) states that “it helped him to break the “rule” of earlier Western art that placed the most significant forms in the middle” (p. 126). Another example of using an asymmetrical balance with the idea of a mirror is Edouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.

Drawing is a type of two-dimensional art with a long history and can be either a preliminary version of some work or a finished product. Drawing media include dry media such as “graphite, metalpoint, charcoal, pastel, crayon and chalk, and liquid media such as pen and ink, brush and ink” (Getlein, 2019, p. 147). Paper itself became an unusual drawing medium that artists like Picasso and Braque first used by cutting out newspaper and pasting it into paintings, eventually leading to collage becoming an independent type of drawing.

In conclusion, Living with art shows how art has developed into what is now thought to be the standard. Renaissance artists made the ground-breaking discovery of linear perspective, which gave paintings a visible three-dimensional aspect. Asymmetrical balance rules give designers and artists more chances to capture the viewer’s attention. Drawing is a separate art form with many mediums and variations and should not be considered just a preliminary stage for other work.
