Scenario: a large number of fish are suddenly found floating dead on a lake. You are called in to investigate the problem. you find an abundance of phytoplankton and no evidence of toxic dumping (see pictures).
According to your observation, you suggest the reason for fish kills is the excessive richness of nutrients in a lake, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen. You explained that excessive amounts of algae bloom is caused by extremely high levels of phosphate and nitrogen caused by surface runoff. Many fish rely on a healthy amount of algae to feed off of, but excessive amounts of algae has terminated many freshwater ecosystems, killing off various species of fish and endangering many more.
Now, you are required to write the lab report to explain how you could test the generalization that lake primary production and the composition of the biota living in lakes are strongly influenced by the availability of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus?
