Task Background – The Scenario:
An issue common to contemporary health care is the evolution and development of increased technology and the demand to update for faster, more comprehensive equipment. This demand is seen in device, prosthesis and pharmaceuticals products which can be expensive, disrupt current practices and lead to other flow on changes and costs.
There is often pressure on clinicians and managers to ensure access to “up-to-date” technology from providers of these technologies. This access can conflict with budgetary allowances, time and pressure from third parties, such as the government and insurers to limit expenses. Evidence supporting new technology can be sparse, which makes it difficult to ensure cost effectiveness.
You are a senior clinician in the radiology department of a major public tertiary hospital. For some time now you have been lobbying for updated MRI technology in your area. This lobbying has not met with agreement, as the CFO has advised you the request has a -ve NP value. Anecdotally you are told that executive management lament how quickly this powerful and expensive technology becomes redundant. You are aware that the latest MRI technology is faster and cheaper than previous models.
