Essay on College Is a Waste of Time and Money

Anyone who has a degree does a great job, but those who haven’t are just as accomplished. In the text, “A College Degree is a Worthy Achievement.” Amarie Dimera talks about how some people think college is too expensive but there are ways around that. She talks about how there are several scholarships and grants to help pay for schooling so that way it’s not much of a stress. She then goes on to say that in today’s society, you must go to college. She elaborates on that saying that a degree increases your salary. College isn’t for everyone and just because it’s not for someone, that doesn’t mean they’re unsuccessful as others. Lots of people are finding ways to make money without a degree and this is not discrediting someone with a degree, because it is an accomplishment to some. To some people it’s an accomplishment, to some it’s a requirement, and to others, it’s a total waste of time. Some positive things about college are scholarships & grants, field/pay, diversity, and people’s view of you. the economy, and the different kinds of schooling. Some obstacles are the cost of school, debts, the stress that comes, and the low promise of a job. A college degree is a worthy achievement depending on the person and their aspirations, some people see it as a waste of money, some see it as a waste of time, but others think of it as a certification

Many people may say that college is a waste of money which it can be. You don’t necessarily need a piece of paper saying you took extra classes to verify you know the content. Some people learn certain skills and abilities from their families. Some advantages of not taking those classes are they know the content, and their family-friends know and trust them doing whatever it is they do. While some disadvantages of not going to school are outside people may think that’s not enough credentials, and that they are not as qualified. Some high-skilled jobs can be taught for free or at little to no cost. Patel said it best when he said “You’ll learn, but you might not learn what you need to succeed as an entrepreneur.” (Patel, 1) In other words, he’s saying you’re spending lots of money to learn something that will not help you in life. High school students are becoming business owners quickly without any classes being taken, therefore it is free. In addition, some engineers can learn their trade from a friend for little to no cost. Some pros to learning from a friend instead of a college/institute are you start to build a trade/business yourself without any debts. While some cons to that are people may not think you’re qualified. Many people can make a living off something they can do themselves such as tumbling, tutoring, and makeup. Today people have “side jobs” in which they provide a service that not many other people know how to do. This gives you an advantage because the service is common knowledge to you and you get money to teach others whether they get it or not. A few advantages are they could not understand your service and continue to come to further understand, and no one else around knows your service. Some disadvantages are lots of other people know how to do what you’re trying to teach, or no one wants to learn what you have to teach.

Other people may look at college as years in your life go to waste which can be true. So many people are going to school for something they don’t even do after graduation. “It was fun, but I can’t say my knowledge of those topics helped me much while looking for a job.” (Housman 1) says a professor. The following source proves that the classes that you take for four whole years are not useful. So many people are going to school for something they don’t even do after graduation. Only 25% of students go to school for what they studied in school. This makes those classes pointless and a waste of time. “Unfortunately, 70 percent of the things my professors taught, I already knew. The other 30 percent was either wrong or outdated.” (Patel 1) after reading this it makes the reader see how the things you are learning aren’t helpful whatsoever. Some good things about going to school for four years to learn something you won’t even need are they know things about another job and a job of their own. Some bad things about going to school to learn something you won’t ever use are they just took four years out of their lives to learn about things they will never use again. Some people think that if you start working before college then you get a headstart to success. After going to school for four years, your high school friend might already be making twice as much, because they started working early. Some positive outcomes of going to a four-year school are you continue to be a young adult for a little while longer, you don’t have serious bills for the next few years. While some negative outcomes of going to a four-year school are you can miss an opportunity you would have gotten if you went to school. “It takes months or years to get a diploma, certificate, or degree. Then, it can take days or weeks or months (or even longer) to get a job” (Time and Money, 1) meaning that it takes forever to finish school and even more time to find the job you want.

A college degree is a certification to some people. Some people look for a college degree for certification that they’ve done the right thing in life. Some people have parents that force a degree on them so when they finally get the degree, they feel sure that they have their parent’s love. Many people don’t go to school and fear that their parents will look at them like they are a disgrace. Some pros are it is a drive to make them want to go. While some cons are it can cause depression, and can make them unhappy. Some people think that to be successful in life, they need a degree. People think that to have a successful business you need to go to school for business management, networking, or communication. Some pros are it can help advance your business. While some cons are it can leave you in debt, and your successful business isn’t promised.

No one needs a degree to make their parents proud, many parents just want their kids to go to college for the experience. Parents also want their kids to go to school just so they can say they got a degree which is the same as seeking certification. You do not need a degree to be successful in life, there are so many people today living lavishly today with no degree and others living check to check with a degree. So many people don’t even find a job in the field they studied, which wastes four years and tons of debt.

To complete the argument, college is not a necessity and is not for everyone. It’s a nice thing to experience and a great thing to do, but there are other ways in life to get to the top. A college degree is a worthy achievement depending on the person and their aspirations, some people see it as a waste of money, some see it as a waste of time, but others think of it as a certification.
