Module 4: Milestone 2
The objective of this milestone is to analyze data using aggregate functions, calculated fields, parameters, and table calculations, and create effective data visualizations.
Prompt
In the first milestone, you came up with 10 questions that you could answer using the dataset you chose. You also identified 10 chart types to answer those questions. For this assignment, you will first answer the following questions:
Based on the feedback you have received, will you alter, remove, or change any questions you have chosen? Why or Why not?
Based on the feedback received, will you alter, remove, or change any chart type you have chosen? Why or Why not?
Next, you will construct charts using Tableau. It is expected that you have one chart for each question. Thus, if you have 10 questions, you should have 10 charts minimum. As you construct your charts, address the following:
Use one of the following in one of your charts: aggregate functions or calculated fields.
Use one of the following in one of your charts: parameters or table calculations.
Consider the Gestalt principles that are covered in Chapter 3 of Story Telling with Data (alignment, white space, and contrast) to answer this question. What things can you add or change to make your charts more effective? Apply at least two of the three principles to at least two different charts.
Consider preattentive attributes and traditional design concepts that are covered in Chapters 4 and 5 in Story Telling with Data to answer this question. What things can you add or change to make your charts more effective? Use one of the preattentive attributes and one of the traditional design concepts to improve the effectiveness of at least two different charts.
Next, you will write a short paper on the data analysis process by addressing the following questions:
How did you use an aggregate function or calculated field in your data analysis?
How did you use parameters or table calculations in your data analysis?
How did the Gestalt principles you have used improve your visuals?
How did preattentive attributes and traditional design concepts you have used improve your visuals?
Is the story you want to tell the same? Did you change your story? If yes, what is the purpose of your updated story?
