DUE DATE JULY 9TH 10 pm ((ARIZONA STATE TIME))
Attached here is a copy of the Tax Research Exercise and related instructions. A blank Word template is also provided and must be used in completing this project. When you have completed the assignment (please see the course schedule for the due date), you must upload the electronic version of your tax research exercise via Canvas as explained in the course syllabus (in the Assignments module). Ensure the uploaded file is in either “old” Word (Office 1997-2003) or current Word format (.doc or .docx, not .rtf, txt. or other format) and that the file name largely adheres to this naming convention: StudentFirstName_StudentLastName_ACC430_Online_Summer2024_Tax_Research_Exercise.docx. For example, when June Smith submits her completed project, the filename should look much like this: June_Smith_ACC430_Online_Summer2024_Tax_Research_Exercise.docx.
Follow the instructions shown on the problems list in terms of formatting/arranging your submission and start with the blank Word template provided. I suggest you review the included “sample” question for guidance as to what the end-product might look like (it is a student submission from a similar course from a few years ago). There is no right or wrong “length” for your submission – general guidance as to length is provided in the attachments. Your solutions (Arguments and Authorities) should contain appropriate references to your supporting materials (both primary or secondary sources). Important! You must provide a copy of at least one case, statute, ruling, etc. you located on CCH or RIA as part of your submission (please keep it to a few pages – don’t get carried away as I don’t want fifteen pages of supplements). I will use this item(s) as evidence you have mastered or at least learned some basic functionality with the CCH/RIA systems, including how to save a research document to Word (cut and paste is fine too) for inclusion in your submission. In other words, as is discussed in the course lecture materials, I do not want you simply locating supporting documents on the Web (e.g. Google) as many sources of “tax” information are highly suspect and not very accurate or reliable. Do not alter the provided template in any material manner – this is not the project to “do your own thing.” PS – run spell and grammar check before submitting – such things count!
Let me know if you have any questions.
P.S. – I emphasize this is an individual assignment and each student must prepare his/her own set of research responses, (e.g., students should not form groups or teams to write their responses). While you may collaborate and/or assist one another with the research elements of the exercise (I don’t object if two or three of you bounce ideas off one another – sharing ideas is not generally a bad thing), I emphasize here that each student must submit his/her own research responses. DO NOT form “teams” and divvy-up the problems – i.e., Bob researches item 1, Sandra researches item 2 and they work together on item 3. Then that “team” submits a write-up (substantially the same document from both Bob and Sandra). Engaging in this or similar conduct goes beyond basic collaboration and will earn you a failing grade. Note the uploaded electronic version of your completed responses will be processed through certain software designed to detect prohibited conduct (joint writing, plagiarism, etc.). Also, locating (on the Web or otherwise) and utilizing earlier versions of this assignment constitutes prohibited conduct – you should do this yourself! The same prohibition applies to the use of ChatGPT or similar AI “bots” – you should do this yourself. Failure to abide by these rules may result in the rejection of your tax research exercise and receipt of a score of zero (-0-).
