One of the most pervasive ideas across the world is that there are fundamental, biological differences between men and women. This idea is used to explain why men and women act they way that they do, and to support ideas about how one gender may be “better” at a certain task or job. For example, many people believe than women are biologically better at taking care of children, or that men are naturally better at math and science, or better drivers! What these stereotypes fail to recognize is that there are a lot of social factors that go into encouraging men or women to pursue certain activities or interests, and that our brains are fundamentally the same.
For this blog, pick a gender stereotype—a commonly held idea about what men or women CAN or SHOULD do, based on their different (biological) abilities. Then think about what these stereotypes are based on: are there actual biological differences, or are there cultural factors at play? Do some internet research—is there data to support these stereotypes, or does the data contradict stereotypes?
For example, let’s take the idea that women are bad drivers. This is a VERY widely held belief, but what is it based on? Sure, there are tons of videos on youtube of women failing to parallel park well, or driving up the sidewalk and hitting other cars while trying to make turns. BUT, women on average have lower car insurance rates than men, because men are consistently more likely to engage in riskier driving that results in larger and more expensive accidents. So what does that tell us about women’s driving abilities?

Or, think about the idea that women are better care-takers or home-makers, and therefore women should be responsible for more child care and household tasks. Data shows us that women consistently spend more time than men taking care of kids and doing chores around the house.
Where does this come from? What can we learn by looking at how toys are marketed to children?

Your response needs to be at least 10 sentences. Include links to articles or data that you used in your research. And don’t forget to end with a question related to your topic.
