2) Daylight Saving Time
At various times in history, “daylight saving time” (DST) has been observed between
the months of March and November, when the daylight hours are more numerous,
ostensibly as a means of saving energy by syncing the clock with the hours people
are more likely to be awake and active.
Is daylight saving time a reasonable concept that benefits individuals and
businesses, saving energy as well? Is it instead more problematic that helpful,
leading to unanticipated complications and annoying inconvenienced citizens?
Considering potential arguments in terms of energy efficiency, public safety, social
customs, and economic impact, you should make an argument about whether
daylight saving time should remain as it is or whether either standard time or DST
should be observed year-round instead.
Your task is to 1) introduce and explain concept daylight saving time 2) to articulate
a clear, persuasive thesis regarding whether it is a practical timekeeping shift or an
outdated nuisance, and 3) to support your claims with textual evidence from sources
provided by the instructor and of your own choosing. Whatever form your argument
takes, you must describe at least two counterarguments, which you will provide
rebuttals for.
Whichever of those two topics you select, it is up to you to define a clear, compelling
thesis that makes an argument about some aspect of your chosen topic! Before you
can fully develop your position, you must provide appropriate contextual information
to introduce the topic to your reader. In other words, you must demonstrate your
skill with both summary and analysis as you prepare this final ENG 131 project!
Please feel free to make use of office hours to discuss your topic ideas with me.
Happy writing
You must include research and
supporting evidence from at least
two research sources I provide (but preferably more) and a total of at least five total
supporting quotes/paraphrases (but, again, preferably more).
You have the option to also include material from no more than two additional sources
(no public web pages!). You are not required to find research of your own, but you are
permitted to do so if you feel it would enable you to better defend your position.
If you choose to incorporate into your paper a source you find on your own, you must
cite it properly in the body of your essay (with both a signal phrase and a parenthetical
citation) and also include in a properly-formatted entry for it in your bibliography.
With the exception of articles accessed through the library databases, internet-based
sources are not acceptable sources for this assignment. The inclusion of wording
OR ideas from outside sources not properly cited in both the essay and
bibliography is expressly prohibited—even if you reword such information!

Final essay project
◼ Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA) Page
You will be expected to include a properly-formatted bibliography, in either MLA or
APA style, at the end of your essay (sorry, but this does not count towards your
paper length!). If you need assistance with this, remember that you may seek
guidance from the Writing Office staff, the reference desk librarians, or from me
during office hours. You are allowed to use online citation generators for assistance.
◼ Counterargument/Rebuttal paragraph
To elevate the complexity of this assignment and provide you with a nifty way to
further the development of your essay, you should include at least two
counterargument and rebuttal paragraphs in the body of your essay.
While most body paragraphs focus on providing supporting evidence to bolster the
primary claim of the essay (i.e. your thesis), the counterargument/rebuttal
paragraph presents an alternative argument. This argument is then either
undermined or demonstrated to be less important or less convincing than your
supporting evidence. This technique allows you to demonstrate to your reader the
breadth of your knowledge on the subject, to apply critical reasoning to alternative
views, and to ultimately justify your thesis by undermining those alternatives.
◼ Reminders
Plan early! You need time to review the research I’ve provided, to plan out and
organize your argument, to write the actual essay, to draft your bibliography, and to
carefully scrutinize and proofread your final paper.
Develop a thesis! It is not enough to merely restate the issue itself; you must have
a position. This is not a book report—it is a demonstration of critical thinking skills as
well as college-level writing. Papers lacking a clear thesis will earn a C at best.
Seek assistance—but do the work yourself! Take advantage of available support
services such as the Writing Office, the library Reference Desk, and your instructor’s
office hours. You may also consider having a friend, family member, or classmate
review your work to offer feedback (provided that they only comment on your
writing and do not create it for you!).
Submit complete work! This is a 4-6 page essay. Unlike the mid-semester essay,
in which papers falling just short of the length requirement were merely penalized,
final essays of less than four full pages of properly-formatted, double-spaced, 12-
point Times New Roman text will not be graded. Reread that last sentence!
◼ Academic Integrity
As always, students are expected to submit assignments that reflect their own work
and abilities. While suggestions are certainly permitted on drafts (in fact, the Writing
Center is a great place to get feedback on an early version of a paper!), material that
a student has not written should never appear in his or her papers. Please refer
to the Academic Integrity policy in the course syllabus for expectations/consequences.
For this assignment, papers will be submitted to Turnitin.com rather than HFC
Online (instructions will be given in class about how to do so). Submissions will be
accepted as Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format files (please, no Google Docs, Pages
files, or PDFs). Use the standard essay format for this class.
