10 Things I Hate About You is a movie that was produced by Andrew Lazar and directed by Gil Junger and released on the 31st/03/1999. It is an American teen romantic comedy that features Bianca, a young beautiful high school student whose desire for a social life is thwarted by her father (Maher 2007).
The father is so strict on her. In fact, he can not allow her to date until her elder sister, Kat does so. However, her persistence later makes her fall in the hands of both loving and exploiting boys who give her different forms of treatments. For instance, Joey takes advantage of her and only uses her as a sex tool. This is a great lesson to her and any other youth who may fall in the trap of such destructive boys.
Actually, this is a must-watch movie because it is educating and useful for both parents and the youth in equal measure. Its theme is so important to all the people in the society. Besides, it makes use of cheerful, inventive and subtle music originally played by the Cleo band (Raymond 2001).
In my analysis, I will focus on Bianca and Joey as my interesting characters that, as the protagonists of this comedy, play a very significant role in helping deliver the main message to the audience. Actually, they are used to represent a class of the youth who defy the orders in the pursuit of pleasure but end up regretting a lot in the long run (Aames 2006).
To begin with, Bianca Kat’s younger sister is a very popular student at Pauda Stadium High School. Her celebrity is brought by the latest designer, fashions, that she wears during her interactions with the other students in the same school. One of the things that fascinate me is the fact that she defies the odds and acts extraordinarily.
She opted not to date Joey, the most popular guy in this school. Instead, she decides to date the little known Cameron. Her idea was that she had seen true love from Cameron, who loved her so much. Their relationship would be more intimate and romantic than if she fell for Joey. Joey is a bad boy and would not treat her with the dignity she deserves. Just the way she discovered, his major objective was to have her for sex then dump her. This is so heartbreaking and can not please any lady who respects her body. She is, therefore, wise enough to choose between love and lust. Unlike in many other instances where ladies prefer bad boys over gentlemen, she avoids this mistake in her case. This helps the readers to be choosy and cautious in all that they do without necessarily being influenced by external forces (Rosenbaum 2000).
On the other hand, Joey is a very opportunistic guy who took popular Bianca for granted. Despite his popularity in the school, his conduct is not good. I am particularly against his cunning conduct, especially when he trapped the charming Bianca and used her as a sex tool before dumping her (Nielsen 2009). He must be a sex maniac because, before his desires for Bianca, this model had bedded her elder sister, Kat.
Actually, this movie is so interesting since it was well directed. The characters make good use of the figures of speech. They use a combination of facial expression, gestures, tonal variation, dramatic pause and constant body movements. At the same time, the movie as staged in a well-designed stage furnished with laser lights to help in creating a captivating warm and colourful view.
Finally, it made good use of moving cool musical beats. The sound is carefully selected to make the play be cheerful and smooth musical tunes from artists like George Clinton, Sister Hazel and Save Ferris (Eisenbach 2000). This helps to make this movie be interesting and appealing to viewers from different ages, background and class. Hence, I would like to agree with this comedy as a true reflection of the challenging youthful life in the world today and that such a movie is not only entertaining but also educating.
