FIRST STUDENT RUTH 50 words response:
In Lucas page 350,Commemorative speeches are speeches of praise or celebration. It is a speech that pays tribute to a person , a group of people,an institution, or an idea. The Elie Wiesel is a tribute speech. The speech is so brief and clear but if you are a person who judge the speaker so easly you can conclude what the speaker intented to say wrongly in this speech. The speaker opened by mentioning A7713 which he said is a new concentration camp tattoo, but in his speech he introduced us to an here who is Elie Wiesel.Lucas page 350 states, “As an informative speech ,you probably will have to give the audience information about your subject. After all ,the audience must know why your subject is praiseworthy. The same way the speaker did, he gave us the source route of the story by mentioning the tatoo of concentration camp which he meant the memories of Elie when he was arrested and when he saw many die in his precence , where he fought later that he did not want the hollygost of what he went through.
second question
Page 351 states that when speaking to commemorate , you have to express feelings to stir sentiments of joy.In this speech the boy stated by telling a little backroung of his story then he went ahead to praise his dad how he was so good to him despite all mistakes he did he was forgiven.Which in one of the meaning of the commemorative is to pay tribute to a person.
SECOND SUDENT 50 WORDS PAIGE:
The textbook states that a commemorative speech’s fundamental purpose is to inspire the audience and “arouse and heighten their appreciation of or admiration for the person, institution, or idea you are praising” by using eloquent language throughout the speech (Lucas, 351). The speaker in the Elie Wiesel speech does this perfectly from the very beginning of the speech. The use of “A7713” to identify Elie Wiesel builds anticipation and drama. Throughout the speech, the speaker uses figurative language and creates a sense of admiration and vividness for Elie Wiesel’s life. For example, he uses a quote from Elie Wiesel that mentions the “wreaths of smoke,” which is an incredibly vivid description of what Wiesel had to witness in the concentration camp.
This commemorative speech by Ronald Reagan pays tribute to veterans all across America and arouses feelings of patriotism and gratitude. The speech follows the criteria outlined for commemorative speeches by heightening the public’s admiration for veterans and shows their significance and sacrifice to all of America. Reagan also uses eloquent language throughout the speech to generate emotions within his audience. He says that “when a serviceman dies, it’s a tear in the fabric” of America and “all we can do is remember.” This use of figurative language paints a picture that our service members are crucial to America and their sacrifice will. never be forgotten as they left a permanent tear/hole.
FIRST STUDENT FOR SECOND CLASS 100 WORDS MINIMUM Ellie:
The first takeaway that I have learned from this course is all the different conflict styles that we learned throughout the semester. In the text, states that “there are five traditional conflict styles: avoiding, accommodating, competing, compromising, and collaborating. These styles reflect the tension between seeking personal goals and working cooperatively to achieve the group’s goal” (Engleberg & Wynn, 2013, p. 141). I would say that this particular concept is really going to help me outside of this course, because I will be able to read people’s conflict style better, and get a better feel on how to communicate more effectively with them. Now with that being said, I am not saying that all of these conflict styles are healthy, in fact I do believe all five of them have some sort of flaw, but just knowing what a person’s conflict style is just tells me how good (or bad) they are at communicating all together. Especially with me wanting a job somewhere in the education area, I feel like this will be a good concept to keep fresh in my mind.
2.) The other takeaway from this course would be supportive climate. Supportive climate is defined in the text as “a communication environment in which members feel free to share their opinions and feelings” (Engleberg & Wynn, 2013, p. 115). I am discussing this as a takeaway because I feel as if I know how to provide a supportive climate in my workplace now since I am educated on what a supportive climate looks like after this course. I feel like if you have both a supportive group and climate, the workplace is so much more enjoyable to be at and it is way less toxic than in a defensive climate. This takeaway is arguably one of the most important from this course all together.
SECOND STUDENT FOR SECOND CLASS 100 WORDS MINIMUM Gabriel:
2. Because of the Pandemic, our work and social life heavily rely on virtual communication. In your post, discuss the following questions, 1), 2) & 3).
1) What are the benefits and drawbacks of working virtually with groups?
One of the biggest benefits of working virtually is that each participant is able to work on the project on their own time, other than in meetings. Those involved can have different schedules than the normal 9-5 or school schedule, as long as the work gets done by the deadline, flexibility can be a huge production increase. In a group situation, working in a group virtually can have the drawback of not having answers as quickly as you would in a physical group. While emails and text messages can instantly reach people worldwide, the matter of having that person respond is a completely different worry. In a physical group setting, we can have individual opinions or ideas in a matter of an instant, and that person isn’t able to simply ignore your question like they would be able to do virtually.
2) Has your perspective toward virtual communication changed after the
Pandemic?
I would say that my perspective on virtual communication has not changed after the pandemic, before the pandemic I always liked virtual communication. The flexibility and the ability to reach a larger audience has been something that has always fascinated me. The pandemic put what I already thought was a positive into action.
3) What are some things you learned about yourself when working virtually?
What I learned about myself when working virtually is when I get the most work done. I myself am a night owl, someone who likes to stay up later in the night than most people. During those times at night, due to the flexibility of virtual learning/ work, I’m able to get a larger portion of production and focused work during the evening than I would during normal daytime.
