a) Begin by creating a brand new Quarto file. Set your name to your full (registered in the course) name and student number (e.g., “Jane Smith – 0612345”) and the title to “MATH 1051H – R Assignment 5”
b) Set the Default Output Format to PDF

Water treatment plants add bicarbonate to water in order to keep microorganisms in the system happy and healthy. The data in the file groundwater.csv is a sample of pH is measured on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 14 and bicarbonate levels are measured in parts per million (ppm). Determine if there is a linear relationship between bicarbonate levels and pH in the water, using everything you’ve learned about simple linear regression models, their associated hypothesis tests, and diagnostics.

For the last 31 years my neighbour in Peterborough has been tracking the temperature and number of trick-or-treaters on Hallowe’en. She claims that the temperature effects how many costumed kids are around. The data she’s gathered is provided to you in the file trickOrTreat.csv. Determine if there is a linear relationship between the ambient temperature and the number of kids who visited for Hallowe’en. Interpret the slope and intercept in context. Also answer the following two questions about this model.
a) The temperature next Hallowe’en is forecast to be 10oC warmer than this year. How many more trick- or-treaters can she expect to get?
b) What are the limitations of using a linear model for this data? (e.g., where does the model start to return nonsense results? Any other limitations?)
Bonus: for one bonus mark, when displaying the diagnostic plots for the linear regression model, deliberately hide the code used to create them, so that the plots appear, but the code does not. Ensure you double check the formatting and spacing so the appearance looks good in the final render in order to earn the bonus point.
